Pastor Manly Perry has been pastoring Old Path Baptist Church since April of 2016. Today after a 17 hour shift working through the night, he was kind enough to give us an interview of the upcoming conference. Below is a compilation of notes and questions and quotes from this interview.
Pastor Perry, what do you hope will be the ende result of having a Foundations Conference?
“I’d just like to learn from these men who have grown up in fundamentalism. I’d like to learn from them. My mom and dad were not fundamental Baptists. I wasn’t raised in it and wasn’t a part of it until 20 years old. I would like these guys to highlight things that their parents did that helped them stay with it. That’s the big goal.”
What do you see as the greatest roadblock that you want to tackle that deters godly Christians from homeschooling?
When it comes to the women, most of them are just intimidated or they feel inadequate. The other major roadblock today is the need for a dual income. For families that are in the position that the mom feels inadequate, she should realize that public schools and some Christian choose are definitely more likely to mess up the children than she is. As a homeschool mom you don’t have to know everything, just pray for wisdom, learn as you go, and just stay a couple of steps ahead of the children.
When it comes to dual-income, Husbands need to get a skill set for skilled labor and do whatever it takes. Whether that’s go to one car, downsize the home, dad might need to take a second job, work Saturdays instead of 40 hours a week. God says 6 days shalt thou work. I work six days a week. Keep mom at home, get your skilled labor, learn a skilled trade and make you some decent money.
Why do you think so many godly characters in the Bible failed when it came to rearing their children?
A lot of them we can’t really HIGHLIGHT but we do know why Eli failed, his sons were reprobates and it was because he was lazy. You have to get up and it takes work and discipline to spank your children. Eli was a lazy guy, sitting around, he was heavy and overweight. He wouldn’t have been very motivated to discipline his children. Instead of disciplining his children he reasoned with them. When his children were laying with women at the door of the tabernacle he reasoned with them. As a parent you have to draw the line and lay down the law. Joshua was a control freak, and he said as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. We can do it gently, but you still have to lay down the law and restrain them.
It is possible to do everything right and children still turn out wicked because they have free will, so it’s not always the parent’s fault. That may be what God was trying to show us with Samuel. Noah was a righteous guy but his son turned out wicked. If you have six kids and 1 turns out wicked that may not be the parents fault, but if half of them are turning out wicked then it may be the parenting. One of the reasons that you don’t want to be critical of everyone’s parenting skills is because our children aren’t raised yet. So you don’t want to be critical of everyone’s parenting skills.
On a note of curiosity when I asked Pastor Perry about Noah and his son Ham, Pastor Perry had an interpretation that I had not heard of before but would like to elaborate here:
“I don’t believe Ham was a sodomite.” When the Bible says that Ham uncovered his father’s nakedness the Bible refers to his father’s wife as his father’s nakedness. Leviticus 18:8 says “The nakedness of thy father’s wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father’s nakedness.” In Genesis 9:23 when Shem and Ham took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father, it is speaking of them going and covering up their mother.
Think about it, why would Ham come out and brag to his brothers about laying with his dad? But if he has an attractive step-mom, it makes much more sense. It also makes sense in light that if you see your dad’s nakedness you just cover your eyes, but when it’s your mom you don’t want to be accused of doing anything so you get a second witness and go to great lengths, i.e. going in backward to cover the nakedness to not be exposed to that.
